Band 8+ lexis is judged on natural collocation, topic-appropriate precision, and controlled paraphrase — not on inserting rare vocabulary. Misused sophisticated words cost more than plain, accurate ones.

The pattern
Nominalisation (turn verbs into noun phrases), precise quantifiers (a significant proportion vs many), and topic-accurate collocation (give rise to, adverse consequences) — not rarer synonyms for their own sake.

Original: "Governments should invest more in public transport."
